Getting Your Site Indexed Before You Launch July 31, 2008

Filed under: Great Travel Tips @ 9:44 pm

I’ve noticed that most SEO articles focus on what to do after you launch your site. Those that do deal with preparing your site for launch usually discuss on-site SEO like keyword research and meta tags. What tends to be neglected is the advantage that you can gain by getting your site indexed before you launch. With a little planning and a few hours of work it’s easy to be indexed by Google, Yahoo, and MSN before your site goes live.

The key to getting your site indexed in the big three is getting links pointing to it from sites that are already indexed. When the search bots crawl those sites they will inevitably find the link to your site and your site will be added to their index. Follow these five steps a month before you launch and you’ll be a step ahead of the game.

1. Register your domain name. You’d be surprised how many people wait until the last minute to do this. The sooner you register your domain, the sooner you can get some quality links pointing to it and get it indexed.

2. Put up a home page. Make a “coming soon” page with your logo, information about your site, and expected launch date. You can also add a form for people to sign up for email updates about your site. This starts building your email marketing list before you even launch.

3. Start a blog and sign up for Feedburner. Put up a blog at www.yoursite.com/blog. It doesn’t matter if you use WordPress, Blogger, or whatever blog platform you prefer, just make sure you host it on your site. Make a few posts about your site, what people can expect when it launches, and why your site will be unique. After your first post, sign up for a Feedburner account at http://www.feedburner.com/. Under ‘Publicize’ in your account make sure to sign up for ‘Ping Shot’. This will notify blogging directories of your posts which hopefully will result in a few links to your site.

4. Write a few articles and submit to directories. Regardless of what your site is about, there is certainly a topic relating to your site that you could write an article about. For example, if your site is going to sell fitness equipment, you could write an article about how to build a home-gym. Or if you are going to rate and review new cars, you could write an article about how to shop for a new car. After you’ve written and proofread your articles, submit them to article directories like Ezine Articles (http://www.ezinearticles.com/) and iSnare (http://www.isnare.com/). Be sure to include a description of your new site and a link back to it in the resource box. Again, this should result in a few links to your site.

5. Get a link from an indexed site. Steps 3 and 4 should result in some links from indexed sites which should then ensure your site to be indexed. But it can’t hurt to get a few more on your own to be certain. When I launched my last site, I linked to it from my personal blog, which I knew was indexed. If you don’t have that option, you can ask someone with a blog or site related to yours to mention it. If you can’t find anyone willing to do it for free, you could offer them some free advertising on your site when you launch in exchange for the link.

Getting yourself indexed before you launch gives you a head start on your SEO and will allow your site to have a more immediate impact. Why wait until you launch? Get started a month early and you’ll reap the benefits when launch day rolls around.

Nightclub Etiquette July 28, 2008

Filed under: Great Travel Tips @ 6:52 am

So you’re in Miami, but you’ve never been “clubbing” (as the kids these days seems to say) before? No problem. This handy little guide will tell you all you need to know about the do’s and don’ts of behavior in the clubs (Note: this is a generic guide. Perhaps some other installment I will tackle the more “specialized” club etiquette, such as S&M, gothic, and medical fetish.)

The first thing you will notice upon approaching a club in the wild is a long line of people with a large, ape-like man at the fore. This fellow is the bouncer. Generally speaking, all bouncers have is their muscle, and they like to flex it. You can spend a long time in these lines, never seeing the wonders of the club interior, if you do not behave properly towards these men-mountains. Here are some fun and easy steps that will get you in faster:

1. Dress appropriately. Many clubs have a no-jeans policy. Others want you clad only in bearskin. Pay attention to the dress code.
2. Don’t tick off the bouncer. They hold all the cards in this situation, so be courteous and understanding to these Darwinian nightmares.
3. Bouncers love women. If you have flirty, giggly women in your party, you will get in much faster. If you don’t, you can try to be friendly with some unattached women in line, making it seem like they are in your party WARNING: This can make you look like a huge jerk if it backfires.
4. Bouncers love shiny things. When you go up to him to ask how long the wait is, slip him a silver dollar (or better, twenty in bill form). Don’t tip him too low, or you will never get in. If you tip him too high, people will think you have no concept of the value of money. This, admittedly, can help you with the opposite sex.

We’ll assume for the sake of this article that you made it past the bouncer. Good job! Two edifices now loom in front of you: The bar and the dance-floor. Both have a number of drunken people bumping into one another, so they can be difficult to tell apart. First up: The Bar.
Ordering a drink at the bar is much like ordering one at your local public house, but even so, there are a few things worth mentioning. The first is obvious: it is really crowded. It can be very difficult to get a drink under these conditions. Here are some fun and easy steps that will get you loaded at full efficiency:

1. Pay with cash. The frenzied pace of this kind of place makes it easy to end up with someone else’s drinks on your tab, and trust me, once they are on there, they’re not coming off.
2. Consider learning the bartender’s name. If they are familiar with you, you’ll stick out in a crowd. I would not, however, recommend calling their names out loudly from across the bar while they are busy. This could hurt their feelings and make them never talk to you again.
3. These bar-folk are working very very hard. Always tip for everything (including water!) A dollar per drink is usually about right.
4. Don’t block other patrons from ordering once you have your drink. More out of the way swiftly, or you will be reviled.

Onto the dance floor. Liquor ingested, you should be ready by this point to get out into the teeming mass of humanity and show them all what you can do. Here are some fun and easy tips to get you out there without making (too much of) a fool of yourself.

1. Don’t bug the DJ too much. It’s okay to request a song, but don’t do it too often. Otherwise they will play Ace-of-Base and say that you requested it.
2. Repeatedly “accidentally” bouncing into the women on the floor will do nothing but convince them you are a pervert, and possibly a serial killer.
3. Don’t get into the middle of things, flailing wildly and taking up space, for the sake of flailing wildly and taking up space. This might seem like it goes without saying, but any club you go to has about 20 of these guys making dancing difficult for everyone else. You can have fun in the thick of things without tripping everyone up, even if you aren’t a great dancer. Just be alert.
4. Don’t bump and grind with a girl unless you know she’s interested. If she’s not, she could complain to the aforementioned bouncer, and you could have some serious trouble (after all the work it took to get here, you wouldn’t want to get bounced, would you?)

Well, that information should have you well on the way to having a great time in the clubs of Miami. Be smart, be cool, and you should have no problem. If you are a loud idiot, well, you’ve been warned and I won’t be held responsible. Happy travels, and happy eating/drinking/dancing/debauchery.

Overweight? – 5 Tips to Enhance Your Sex Drive July 27, 2008

Filed under: Great Travel Tips @ 9:00 pm

You could try one of the many sexual enhancement drugs available today. You could sign up for very expensive workshops and retreats. You could even strip down and pole dance for your partner.

My guess is that these things just aren’t your style. I believe that you’re seeking natural and balanced healing for your sexdrive and your overweight body.

You’re tired, your energy is low and you aren’t feeling quite like you think you should. You don’t have unrealistic expectations. You do have some dreams you’ve hung onto despite your physical size. You’ve clung to them, knowing that some day those dreams would take you to a place inside you where you were finally ready to take control.

Welcome to your life. A life that will continue to grow more healthy, from here on. Once you embark on a journey of self-discovery and empowerment, you can never plead ignorance again. You can never say…”I didn’t know”.

Your sex drive does not need to take a complete dive while you’re in the process of losing weight. That extra weight does not have to be like carrying heavy sacks of spuds around. It doesn’t have to tire you out.

Simple things you can do to help energize you and lighten the load include the following suggestions.

1. You can make sure your daily food intake contains the highest possible raw content you can achieve up to about 80%. For now, to go much higher is a path you can move into. Keep the raw fruits and veggies separate and your energy level will steadily climb. Your body WILL respond to what you feed it. It has no choice, chemically speaking.

2. Step in place for ten minutes. Hardly a spit in the ocean of time in your day. Get up and do this for yourself. I promise your Self will love you for it. Walk around the block or walk in place. Preferably outside and breathing with a full inhale/exhale. The more you move, the more you’ll be able to move both in your live and in your love life. You don’t want your partner to have to do all the work do you? Keep your eye on the prize. It’s your dream. You CAN make it happen!

3. Make the choice to work at your sex life. Most especially if you and your partner have been together a long time. Sometimes things just need sprucing up. If you feel too overweight to feel sexy, try splitting a bottle of pleasant red wine. Put on something nice and enhance the mood of your room. Work at it. Overweight, underweight or just perfect, people have to make the effort to keep the sexual tension alive.

4. Tend to your physical appearance. Sometimes in our daily lives, we forget to take a moment to add the little touches that we used to do daily. Trim those stray hairs or apply that bit of lipstick. Small things can enhance your appearance and the way you walk, adding confidence to your style. When we take care of ourselves, we stand taller and feel better about ourselves.

5. Don’t let life get in the way of preserving the passion and fire you and your partner once had. Don’t let the pounds you’re in the process of losing, discourage you from feeling just as sexy as you did. You’ll get there again and when you do, you’ll still have your mate. The one you fell in love with. Don’t let anything get in the way. Schedule dates with your mate and make the effort.

We have all sorts of obstacles in life and each one can seem insurmountable at the time. Later, we can see each in perspective and sometimes even with humor. Don’t let tomorrow’s comic relief get you down today. Do something about your sex life and the drive will take care of itself.

Choosing the Best Location for Your Small Business July 25, 2008

Filed under: Great Travel Tips @ 11:45 am

When you’re starting a new business you’ll naturally want to choose the best location possible to make sure your small business has the opportunity to grow into a big business.

Of course, the best location for your small business will depend on the type of business you’re in, but here are a few things to think about when you’re choosing your location:

1. The best location for your small business could be somewhere close to other businesses

It may sound like commercial suicide to locate your new business close to other businesses which are offering a similar service, but that’s not necessarily the case. If you open a convenience store near a large supermarket, for example, you could find yourself picking up trade from people who can’t be bothered trailing around the aisles for one loaf of bread: and when the larger store runs out of a particular item you can bet that the first place people will come looking for it will be your store.

In general terms, if your small business is in retail, your best chance of gaining customers could be locating in a busy area with lots of other retailers around. That way you’ll benefit from walk-by trade, and as soon as your store opens it will attract the attention of people who normally shop in that area anyway.

Remember: customers are lazy, and they’ll only travel to shop with you if you’re offering something they just can’t get anywhere else. If you’re selling the kind of goods that are easily available (and now that internet shopping is available, most things are easily available), you best locate your small business somewhere accessible.

2. The best location for your small business could be your own home

If your small business is offering services rather than products, the best location to start up could be your own home. Running a business from home saves you money on many things: travel, business clothes, equipment, food… In fact, many service-based businesses can be started very cheaply, with just a computer and a phone line.

The disadvantage of a home based business, of course, is that you won’t benefit from the pass-by trade mentioned above, so you’ll spend much more time marketing yourself and finding clients if you want to be successful.

3. Could the internet be the best location for your small business?

Basing your business online has similar advantages and disadvantages to basing one in your home. Your start-up costs are likely to be low, and if you’re using a laptop you can literally work from anywhere in the world, but you will have to work harder on marketing your services in order to find those initial clients.

Pet Portraits From Photos – How To Take A Great Reference Photo

Filed under: Great Travel Tips @ 11:59 am

The old adage, the better the photo, the better painting certainly holds true with pet portraits. As a pet portrait artist, I am continually perusing through photos that people send to me to find the perfect pose to use for a memorable portrait.

The very best view for the photo is to be eye level with the animal you wish to photograph. Try to have their nose tipped downward slightly, otherwise the camera may distort their nose and jaw making them appear larger than they really are. For smaller dogs or cats, I like to place them up on a couch or chair, so that I can be eye level with them. The furniture also makes a nice backdrop to the painting. Even larger dogs look adorable and comfy lounging on a couch, chair or bed. I sometimes use a little squeak from a dog toy to cause a dog to prick up his or her ears. This can backfire, however, if the dog wants to play and leaves his pose for a lively romp!

It’s not necessary to be too concerned with the background in the photo. One nice thing about paintings is that backgrounds can be easily changed. If the perfect photo has a less than perfect background, a more meaningful background can be placed into the painting. If your dog loves the beach, the mountains, backyard or wherever, this background can be painted into the portrait. One woman wanted her father’s Miniature Pinscher named Lucy placed in a Texas theme. The reference photo was of Lucy on gravel pavement with picnic supplies behind her. I changed the background to a grassy area with a blanket behind her hanging in the wind that contained the Lone Star of Texas symbol on the blanket. Lucy’s red scarf against her black fur added that special touch to the portrait.

I remember photographing a Shih Tzu named Bailey outside on his bed which was placed low on the rock patio. I laid flat on my stomach for that photo. Bailey was experiencing the last few weeks of his life, was incontinent and couldn’t be photographed inside the house or on any piece of furniture. The day was warm and sunny and Bailey looked his best in his green bed smiling a greeting among the red carnations growing in pots behind him. He had a very long and comfortable life and I’m so honored to have met him before he passed on.

Fortunately, it is possible to combine photos for the animal, as well as the background. I remember a Merle Australian Shepherd named Annie. Her Mom sent several good photos to me of Annie sitting in her backyard. “The photo I love best,” she told me, “is the one with her ears back. I wish her ears were more forward. Otherwise, this would have been the perfect photo.” One of the photos she had sent to me were showing Annie’s ears forward, so I just combined the two photos into one painting, painting Annie’s ears forward from the one photo and using the body posture and expression of the other photo. Annie’s Mom was delighted!

I remember one visit to an aged Rottweiler’s home. The dog’s name was Ginger and she was very gray around the muzzle and had a problem with arthritis. Ginger’s Mom was unable to take the photo because of a tremor in her hands. Ginger was utterly terrified of the camera. Every time I took the camera out of my pocket, Ginger would meander behind some piece of furniture or turn her head away and hide behind her Mom. We decided a chew toy would settle her down and Ginger promptly hid under the dining room table with her prize as she began to gnaw on it. “Now’s my chance,” I thought to myself.

Knowing she had arthritis and wouldn’t be able to scramble away from me in a hurry, I slowly moved the chairs out of my way and climbed under the table! “I’ll either be killed or get a great photo,” I thought to myself. Not hearing any growling or other warning signal from Ginger, I lay flat on the floor in front of her. Just then Ginger’s Mom called her name, Ginger looked up and “Click!” I got a truly great photo. I did thank the angels that day as I drove home with my prize photo waiting patiently in my digital camera. For the painting, I just deleted the furniture around her and added a lovely background. I painted out the gray on her muzzle and also added a young, fresher appearance to the golden tan of her face and body.

Cats are extremely photogenic. They seem to be striking up a pose no matter what they do. I love window shots especially. There’s just something about a cat peering out the window that makes a lovely composition for a painting. One of my favorite reference photos was of a cat named Tillie lying amid her mom’s scarf. The scarf was a maroon color with an interesting pattern and looked great against Tillie’s black fur. The same rule of thumb applies to cats, too, of being sure to be at eye level with them. Even cats that are sleeping make great photos. I especially remember two cats in a basket curled up together that made a lovely painting. You could hardly tell where one cat started and the other one stopped!

With these tips for the best photo angles and explanations of how portraits are painted from reference photos, you’re now ready to capture your pet’s likeness in a way that will contribute to a lasting memorial treasure – a pet portrait either for yourself or a special gift for your friend or relative.

There is No Long Term Alternative to Democracy July 23, 2008

Filed under: Great Travel Tips @ 5:45 pm

Human history is filled with so many successful civilizations and empires and with so many different forms of government, but in the end there appears to be no long-term alternative to democracy. Or rather some form of democracy where the people feel as if they are in somewhat control of their own destiny and live out their lives as if they have choice and are able to pursue a comfortable lifestyle, good standard of living and what they believe to be quality of life.

Those forms of government and civilizations, which disregard basic human rights and abuse the privilege of the people are destined to eventual failure unless those in control rule their empires with an iron fixed. But in doing so that negates a comfortable lifestyle, good standard of living and quality of life. So I ask you; can you name another form of government, which does not have the least some of the components of democracy, which is an alternative that will provide a long-term solution for human civilization.

We saw in George Lucas’s Star Wars that he had put together a government, which had in it a group of wise and learned man who were a collective rule of benevolent dictators. However it also appeared in the movie that there was some form of democracy, voting and self-determination of the people. From a philosophical standpoint one could argue that in all of human history no civilization or empire has been able to be a true and fair to the life of every man, woman or child within that society unless it had some form of democracy attached to its government or rulers. Consider this argument in 2006.

Ninja Swords: What You Need To Know Before You Purchase July 14, 2008

Filed under: Hall Of Martial Arts @ 4:47 am

You’d almost have to be living on another planet to not realize that swords of any kind are becoming very popular among collectors and even investors. Ninja swords and other styles of Chinese weapons are particularly in demand right now.

There are a few key aspects that you should know about before you dish out your money, especially if you plan to buy over the internet. Unfortunately there are many websites claiming to that certain swords are battle ready or can be used for cutting exercises in the dojo and in many situations that is just not true.

Sometimes you might see a website that features a ninja sword and the name of the weapon will be very similar to one of higher quality and will even look exactly like a better well known sword. So the unsuspecting buyer thinks he’s getting this unbelievable that no one else has found on a certain sword. Unfortunately he/she learns the hard way that it’s not what he thought.

If you buy a ninja sword that’s not worthy to be used for anything but hanging on the wall and you take it to the dojo serious injury could result. The main trait of a quality ninja sword that you need to look for is to be sure that the blade is forged high carbon steel and preferably differentially tempered.

Differentially tempered means that the back of the blade is not as hard as the edge of the blade. At first some people think that this is not a positive aspect for a high quality ninja sword. Differentially tempering is necessary so that it gives some flexibility to the sword. Differentially tempering makes the ninja sword virtually unbreakable. Hopefully this article has helped you to know the traits to look for when purchasing your next ninja sword.
