Alice Walton and the Rocking W Ranch April 13, 2009

In the 2008 edition of Forbes 400 Richest Americans, Alice Walton, daughter of Wal-Mart’s creator Sam Walton, placed sixth. Her estimated net worth is currently at $23.2 billion. Born in Newport, Arkansas on October 7, 1949, Alice Walton finished her B.A. in economics and finance at Trinity University in San Antonio. When she started working, though, it was not for the family business (Wal-Mart) but for First Commerce Corporation where she worked as an equity analyst and money manager. She also worked as a broker for E.F. Hutton and then founded an investment bank called Llama Company. Aside from her philanthropic dealings with the Walton Family Foundation, Alice Walton is also the proud founder of Rocking W Ranch. A horse lover and hobbyist, she created the organization mainly for the purposes of housing, breeding, training, selling and competing of cutting horses. The sport of cutting is an equestrian event where a horse and its rider earn judges’ points on how they separate a calf from a herd of cattle. They must be able to keep the horse away from the herd for a particular period. Alice Walton is well experienced when it comes to cutting competitions. And this is why one of the most popular offerings of the Rocking W Ranch is the breeding program. Alice Walton’s prized possession, Boon San Sally, a multi-awarded colt, is currently the cornerstone of the ranch’s breeding program. Aside from the breeding program, Rocking W Ranch also offers different horses for sale: show horses, yearlings, broodmares, and two and three-year olds.
