Fine Snow All over Europe February 16, 2009
We have had nearly 1.5 metres of snow during the week. The snowfall has been so prolonged that skiing lifts have been closed, the funicular has been stopping at Chamonix train station and not going to Les Grands Montets. Some roads were blocked and avalanche announcements issued.
Contrast this to two winter seasons past, when there was the unbelievably hot Jan weather, mud appearing on the ski slopes, and warnings that climate change would mean the death of the ski industry in the French Alps. Highlighting this the OECD’s report from winter 2007 predicted that global warming would make snowboarding too expensive for the majority of snowboarders, with a 3rd of ski resorts shutting with the thawing of glaciers. Scientists insist that it’s unimaginable to assign the seasonal differences in the snow conditions to the effects of climate change.
We may be experiencing the deepest downturn in almost 25 yrs, and the Pound has dropped to new levels versus the euro, but the skiing is first-class, and the last reservations show that snowboarders are eager to revel in the supreme snow conditions with our ski accommodation reserved. It is definitely the best in ten winter seasons, and many are stating its the finest ski snowboarding conditions in at least ten winters.
Even so remember that this amount of snow means high risks of avalanche.
